About Saruni Samburu

A collection of six luxury villas with infinity pools carved into a hillside overlooking the Kalama Conservancy, gateway to Kenya's wild northern frontier.

Saruni Samburu is a bold, architecturally striking lodge carved into the rocky hillside of the Kalama Community Conservancy in Kenya's rugged northern frontier. The lodge's six spacious villas — each with its own private infinity pool — command sweeping views across an ancient landscape of sun-scorched plains, granite kopjes, and the distant blue outline of Mount Kenya, creating one of the most visually arresting safari settings in East Africa. Designed by Italian architect Riccardo Leoncini, the villas are a masterful fusion of raw African materials and Mediterranean flair. Walls of local stone open onto double-height living spaces, with handmade Moroccan tiles, Samburu beadwork, and flowing white linens providing textural contrast. Outdoor showers look out over the bush, and each villa's plunge pool is a private oasis for cooling off after dusty morning game drives. The lodge is nestled within the 400,000-acre Kalama Conservancy, managed in partnership with the Samburu community — one of Kenya's most colorful and traditionally intact pastoralist cultures. Guided game drives are conducted by Samburu warriors-turned-guides who bring an unmatched depth of local knowledge, reading animal tracks and interpreting birdsong with skills passed down through generations. Northern Kenya's wildlife is fascinatingly different from the south. The 'Samburu Special Five' — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx — are species found nowhere else in Kenya. The conservancy also supports healthy populations of elephant, lion, leopard, wild dog, and cheetah. The lodge's Warriors Spa uses treatments inspired by Samburu healing traditions, incorporating indigenous herbs, oils, and massage techniques.

Large elephant herds, lions, leopards, cheetahs, African wild dogs, and spotted hyenas are also resident. The Ewaso Ng'iro River attracts hippos, crocodiles, and over 450 bird species.

Best Time to Visit

Northern Kenya is a year-round destination with a hot, semi-arid climate. The dry months of June to October and January to February are best for game viewing when animals congregate around water sources. The green season brings migrant birds and dramatic skies for photography.
