About Angama Mara

Suspended above the Great Rift Valley on the edge of the Masai Mara, this award-winning tented camp delivers one of Africa's most dramatic views and finest safari experiences.

Angama Mara is perched 300 meters above the floor of the Great Rift Valley, occupying the very ridge where some of the most iconic scenes in 'Out of Africa' were filmed. The camp's name, 'angama,' means 'suspended in mid-air' in Swahili — and from the first moment you step onto its glass-fronted viewing deck, you understand why. Below stretches the boundless golden-green expanse of the Masai Mara, where the annual wildebeest migration plays out like a living documentary. The thirty tented suites are split between two intimate camps of fifteen, each with its own dining, lounge, and swimming pool. Every tent is a masterclass in contemporary safari design — floor-to-ceiling glass walls replace traditional canvas, ensuring the Mara panorama is omnipresent. Interiors feature clean lines, Maasai-red accents, handwoven textiles, and custom furniture crafted in the camp's own artisan studio. En-suite bathrooms include rain showers and freestanding copper tubs positioned before the view. The culinary program at Angama Mara is led by a team dedicated to seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Shamba — the on-site kitchen garden — supplies herbs, vegetables, and edible flowers that appear in the multi-course dinner menus. Bush breakfasts are served on the Mara plains, and picnic hampers accompany full-day game drives to remote corners of the reserve. Angama's photographic studio, led by resident photographers, offers guests instruction and curated safari photography excursions. The beading studio invites guests to create jewelry alongside Maasai women from the neighboring community. Below the ridge, exclusive access to a private conservancy bordering the Mara Triangle ensures uncrowded game viewing, while the Mara River's famous crossing points are a short drive away.

Wildlife

The Masai Mara is renowned for its extraordinary density of big cats — it has the highest concentration of lions in Africa and is one of the best places to see leopards and cheetahs. During the migration, over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra cross the Mara River. Resident populations of elephant, buffalo, hippo, and giraffe are abundant.

Best Time to Visit

The Great Migration crosses the Mara River from July to October, creating one of nature's most spectacular events. December to March offers excellent resident game viewing with fewer visitors. The Mara delivers exceptional wildlife sightings year-round, with large predator populations ensuring daily drama.
